What is the File Manager?

The File Manager allows you to manage the assets associated with your site(s).

It offers three types of repositories where files can be kept online:
  • the Restricted Files repository;
  • the Global repository;
  • and one or more Site repositories.

The Restricted Repository

This contains files that require visitors to your website to login to access.

This repositories are not generally accessible - they are restricted to appropriate Site users, and the Super Administrator. More information below.

The Global Repository

This repository contains files viewable by all users of the content management system - but with restrictions on what they can do with the files depending upon their 'user privileges'.

More will be said about user privileges later, however the Global repository is used for materials (documents, images, etc) that are going to used on one or more websites and/or are to be privileged in some way.

For further details, contact your web developer.

The Site Repositories

One or more of these repositories can exist.

These repositories are not generally accessible - they are restricted to appropriate Site users, and the Super Administrator. More information below.

User Privileges and the File Manager

There are 3 types of user privilege within the content management system relating to the File Manager:
  • Super Administrator
  • Site Administrator
  • Site Editor

The Super Administrator

This user privilege allows full access to the content of any and all of the websites. It allows full access and privileges for the Restricted and Global Repositories and all Site Repositories.

There is normally only one Super Administrator per content management system.

The Site Administrator

This user privilege allows access to the content of just one site - the 'Site' site of the administrator. The Site Administrator can add/modify/archive pages, etc on the website to which they are assigned. They cannot access content on any other websites.

The Site Administrator also has full privileges to access content (add/modify/remove content) from their Site Repository.

In addition, they can Add and View content on the Restricted and/or Global Repository - though they cannot modify or delete any materials in these Repositories.  They cannot access archived materials in the these Repositories.

There is only Site Administrator per website.

Site Editor

This is the most restricted of the three privileges. The Site Editor can access content on his or her website and Site Repository, but can only 'view' the contents of the other Repositories - they cannot add to or alter this content.

There can be many Site Editors per website.
